Maxime Bernier invited to participate in federal election leaders’ debates

Debates commissioner David Johnston announced on Monday to to include Maxime Bernier, People's Party of Canada leader in the upcoming federal leadership debates.

Bernier had argued that not inviting him to take part in the debates was the commission’s way of excluding what he says is the only party who had anything different to say.

Here's the criteria for being included in the commission sponsored debates, of which must satisfy two of three:

• Whether the party is represented in the House of Commons by an MP who was an elected as a member of that party
• Whether a party intends to endorse candidates in at least 90 per cent of the country’s 338 ridings
• Whether a party as a “legitimate chance” of electing more than one MP, based on “recent political context, public opinion polls and previous general election results”

The debates will be held on Monday October 7th in English, and Thursday October 10th in French much to the dismay and chagrin of Andrew Scheer and Jagmeet Singh.  Both leaders used the race and division card, in response to this news.  Connecticut born Green Party leader Elizabeth May is expected to boycott the French debate on October 10th, due to her lack of French language skills.
